(Tolland, CT - September 30, 2009) - The Tolland Fire Department, Inc. has broken ground for a new memorial to honor two of its members and the courage and dedication of all firefighters.  The memorial will be dedicated on January 18, 2010, the 20th anniversary of the death of Lt. Gary M. Passaro, a volunteer member of the Tolland Fire Department who died while engaged in a training exercise in 1990.

Lt. Passaro’s death was the Tolland Fire Department’s first loss of a member in the line of duty.  The memorial will also commemorate the passing of the department’s long time photographer, James Cooke, who died in 2001 after returning from the scene of a fire.  In addition the memorial will recognize the day-to-day sacrifice and commitment of all men and women involved in the fire service, both as career professionals and volunteers.

A committee of current and former members of the Tolland Fire Department is overseeing the project.  The new memorial was designed by Jeff Hutton of Earthworks Landscaping of Tolland, which is doing the construction and donating much of the labor.

The memorial is being funded solely through gifts and donations.  Anyone wishing to contribute toward the completion of the memorial may do so by sending a donation to the “TFD Memorial Fund,” P.O. Box 827, Tolland, CT  06084.  Corporate contributors are asked to call 860-871-3677 for more information on how they can help.
